Hiking Mont Blanc with Paula & Hannah Geary Young

Mont

Blanc

110 mile, 38,000 feet elevation gain

An interview with Paula & Hannah

1-What adventure did you just tackle?

We hiked around Mont Blanc - 110 miles and 38,000 feet of elevation gained.

2-How long did it take you?

We hiked it in 10 days. Anywhere between 6 to 8 hours a day.

3-What was a day like?

Typically we woke up, ate breakfast, loaded our packs and hiked up to a Col between peaks then hiked back down to a small village where we stayed.

4-How has CrossFit helped prepare you for this trek?

Total body fitness was definitely helpful because we were in shape for the back to back days but CrossFit also helped our mindset for the grit needed each day.  Often times we would break the hike down into rounds of a WOD in our minds.

5-How long have you done CrossFit?

Since 2018 - so we just started our sixth year.

6- What was your favorite part of the journey?

Lunch time was a highlight. We would find a really pretty place to stop and usually at lunch time this was a high elevation point with a beautiful view.

7- What was the hardest part?

Paula was very anxious the night before the hike and texted Coach Tim Scheftic expressing her self doubt. Tim replied that we would crush it and to live in the moment which put her at ease. The first three days were tough. Our bodies were getting used to the elevation and what we were asking our muscles to do each day.

8- When and how did you decide to tackle this feat?

We started talking about it two years ago after watching Rick Steves on PBS. Then we made the plan about a year ago.

9- Favorite food you are on the trip?

Daily baguettes for both of us and Paula loved the espresso.

10- What would you tell someone hesitant to start CrossFit?

We would say that CrossFit is for everyone and every movement can be scaled to match anyone’s abilities.  Plus the community is welcoming and we have top notch coaching!!!

Often times we would break the hike down into rounds of a WOD in our minds. ”
